Life and Recovery Coaching

Pat has been in her own recovery since 1982 for addiction and co-dependency and  has been working with families since 1984. She started as a volunteer and then in 1986 became a counselor and interventionist.  Pat has come to realize that recovery is a life long process and that clients have possibilities for the future through life and recovery coaching.  Coaching helps clients to identify and define values, strategize decisions, uncover purpose, and provides tools and perspectives for the process of accountability.  Coaching enhances what we are aware of and want in life as empowering helps us to explore and receive encouragement for positive movement and action.

Difference Between Coaching, Counseling, and Sponsorship

Recovery Coaches differ from counselors and therapists because we do not treat addiction or mental health problems.  Coaches neither assess addiction nor offer diagnoses.  We don’t work directly with either addiction or trauma.  We do help recovery clients acquire life skills and succeed in reaching their goals.  Sometimes our clients want to start a new business or finish their dissertation.  Sometimes they want to stop smoking, quit drinking, or get out of debt.  In any case a coach will help the client create a plan and take steps to accomplish their goals.  We differ from Sponsors because as professional coaches we do not represent AA or other twelve-step organizations.  Coaches don’t take clients through the steps or tell them how to work a program to stay sober, abstinent, or serene.  Like other addiction professionals some of us are members of twelve-step programs.  We sponsor and do service work on our own time.

What is Coaching Like?

When Coach and client meet, the coach will ask what the client cares about, what they like to do, and what makes them happy.  Clients are asked about what is missing in their life right now and to describe their perfect life.  Both coach and client will get clear about what is important to the client and what obstacles stand in the way.  Eventually a detailed plan is formed to achieve the client’s goals.  The coach stays on to act as the client’s personal cheerleader, confidant, and consultant while the client experiences taking successful action in recovery.

References:

Pat has received several letters of reference from professionals in the field, along with testimonials from class participants who have experienced true life change through their work with Pat. We present these letters of reference to give you a better idea of who Pat is and what she does:

It is with absolute delight and respect that I write this letter of reference for an astounding trainer, coach, facilitator and interventionist.

Pat Moomey is an amazing woman whose gifts to train and inspire are unprecedented by any other person we have worked with at the Malibu Conference Center and Milestones Ranch Malibu. Pat operates from the heart and has a knowledge base and wisdom that stems from many years of service in the drug and alcohol industry helping individuals and families in desperate need of dual diagnosis services.

As part of the Malibu Conference Center and Milestones we deal with many trainers annually. We always look to Pat as being one of our primary resources. Single purpose trainers come to us and they are great but it is not often that we find someone with the breadth and depth that Pat offers. Because of her experience in running the Salvation Army, she brings a multi-leveled approach to her training that allows her to speak with authority to our senior management team but also to bring a wealth of experience to train line level psych techs.

In the last twelve months, Pat has produced and delivered the following services for us:

  1. A monthly community substance abuse outreach program for Malibu and the surrounding area
  2. One on one coaching - for our clients
  3. Assertiveness training for line staff and clinicians who deal with difficult dual diagnosis patients
  4. Coaching and intervention services for challenging families

Pat is an extraordinary woman whose compassion, commitment and dedication to the industry are unprecedented. Any center that chooses to hire her will not be let down. Our desire is to have her as our team trainer for many years to come as we grow our team and our center.

Please feel free to contact me directly and or  Dr. Seth Kadish should you have any questions regarding her expertise as a trainer.

We are more than happy to answer any questions and provide a person to person reference.

Sincerely,

Denise Klein, MSW, ASW Executive Director Milestones Ranch Malibu 818-667-9537

As Clinical Director of Milestones Ranch Malibu, one of the nation’s most renowned dual diagnosis treatment centers, I have worked with Pat Moomey for the past several years.

Pat is a perceptive and no-nonsense person, well-versed in the world of addiction and human behavior.  She is an extremely talented coach and trainer.   I have had the privilege and pleasure of watching Pat at work with addicts and their families, and been impressed by her mixture of firmness, understanding and compassion.  Frankly, I have learned a great deal from Pat.

I have also participated in Pat’s staff trainings.  They have greatly benefited our staff; Pat really gets them (as she does everybody).  She is able to reach in, guide them, and help them build assertiveness and increase their ability to work with the difficult clients we serve at Milestones.

In short, Pat Moomey is an excellent coach and trainer.  I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Please feel free to call me with any questions or comments you might have.

Sincerely,

Dr. Seth C. Kadish
